The spent PUREX solvent containing U and Pu is generated from the reprocessing process of spent nuclear fuel. The nuclear material removal is important for the safe storage or disposal of the spent solvent. Our previous study revealed that the adsorbent with the iminodiacetic acid (IDA) functional group is one of the most promising materials for designing the nuclear material recovery process. Accordingly, an IDA-type adsorbent was synthesized by using graft polymerization technology or a chemical reaction to improve the adsorption rate and capacity. The synthesized IDA-type adsorbent was characterized by micro particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analyses. The micro-PIXE analysis revealed that Zr was adsorbed on the whole synthesized adsorbents and quantified the microamount of adsorbed Zr. Moreover, EXAFS suggested that Zr in the aqueous solution and solvent can be trapped by the IDA group with different mechanisms.

JAEA has been conducting research and development of MA(III) recovery from HLLW by extraction chromatography technology for reduction in amount and environmental impact of radioactive waste. The behavior of adsorbed cations inside the adsorbent packed in a column is necessary to be evaluated for improvement of the adsorbent or flow-sheet to achieve targeted MA(III) recovery performance. In this paper, micro-PIXE analysis was carried out on the particles sampled from various positions of the column to reveal the behavior of cations inside the packed column with CMPO/SiO $$_{2}$$-P adsorbent. Simple experiment and data analysis were shown to be effective to reveal inside of the column, and formation and transportation of the adsorption bands were observed for some cations which are extractable by the CMPO extractant. Some part of Zr(IV) and Mo(VI) were found to remain inside the column without distinct transportation even after the elution operation.

Local distribution of the elements with specific chemical-states or structures may decide the behaviours of the host materials, but is hardly obtainable by conventional micro-PIXE analysis. On the other hand, Ion Beam-Induced luminescence (IBIL) analysis is able to estimate chemical-state or structural information of the targets distributed in the interaction area of the ion-beam. This will be an ideal analysis probe to obtain chemical-state imaging of the minerals with micro-meter-size structures. In this study, we analyzed several mineral-complex powders of Si, Al, Fe, Mg, and Mn oxides to characterize luminescent properties of them on the developed 3-MeV-H$$^+$$ micro-PIXE/IBIL system. This is a preliminary study to build a database storing those results for the precise analysis of unknown mineral targets. Then, we have tried to analyze actual mineral sample, asbestos.

A new program was started out to create a new medical scientific field, which is consisting of radiation oncology and nuclear medicine, utilizing the advanced accelerator and ion beam technology. An in-air micro-PIXE analyzer system, which is among the most important technical basis of the program, was upgraded to improve accuracy of elemental mapping for samples having thickness variation in a scope of microbeam scanning. In the program, on the other hand, in order to approach important bio-medical problems on cancer, intracellular dynamics of the trace elements according to mechanism of development of diseases were studied using this system. This paper outlines this program and shows the system upgraded, and results of preliminary studied about the problems.
